Coyote Brush can also be called Chaparral Broom, and Bush Baccharis. It is a large, evergreen shrub in the aster family. It is native to California, Oregon, Washington and Baja. It likes dry, sandy, well-drained soil. The plants occur below 2,000 feet in oak woodlands, grasslands, oak woodlands and canyons. It does not do well in shade, so look for it in full sun. Coyote Brush has both male and female plants. The flowers of the female plant look like narrow paintbrushes. The male flowers are wider and have spiky protrusions. The male flowers have yellow pollen and a smell similar to shaving soap.
