Giant Blazing Stars have large flowers on large, bold, perennial plants up to 3 feet tall. This plant is often found in sandy and rocky soils, so the soil at the St. Francis Dam site is perfect for these plants. The Giant Blazing Stars are native to Western North America. The blooms, which can be up to 5 inches across, have often been called spectacular. The star-shaped flowers are a bright yellow, with an open face and lots of long yellow stamens. Once you’ve seen one of these flowers in person, you’ll never forget their name. You may often find them along a road side or other disturbed areas. You can find them blooming in August, September and October.
The plant has had many native medicinal uses including rheumatism, arthritis, earache, fever, smallpox and bruises.
