Tyler, nicknamed “Toby”, was a well-known artist in Alaska, and loved to paint berries and wildflowers. He was considered one of the experts on Alaska native plants and flowers. He was born in New York, moved with his family to California, where he got his teaching credential. He hated being a teacher in California. He took the advice of a friend and moved to Alaska. He bought a log cabin there, taught, and painted. He opened the Ptarmigan Art Gallery, and lived in Alaska and California, painting as he went. He passed on December 22, 2016, after suffering a stroke. He was considered a pillar of the community in Homer, Alaska.
